Located in beautiful Santa Maria, California, Waller Park is home to Kids Day In The Park, a family-oriented fundraiser for the Center that seeks to raise money for our school-based ChildSAFE program. The ChildSAFE program is provided to students in Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valley schools.
ChildSAFE (Safety and Awareness For Everyone) teaches children in an age appropriate manner the difference between good and bad touches and who to tell if they are being hurt. The program stresses three important personal safety rules:
- Say "NO!"
- Get away, FAST
- Tell someone-- NOW!
Children are also taught that abuse is NEVER the child’s fault, and that the adult is responsible. ChildSAFE is well received by parents, teachers, and students alike.
Nearly one million children are abused in the U.S. every year. In northern Santa Barbara County, an average of 215 children are referred to Child Welfare Services each month for assessment of child abuse.Child abuse can include physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, as well as neglect. In the case of sexual abuse, 85% of the victimized children are abused by someone they know and trust rather than a stranger. Both boys and girls are victims and it can happen at any age.
